Writing Net Ionic Equations
1. Original balanced equation:
Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) -------> ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)
2. Rewrite showing ions separated (keep it balanced!):
Zn(s) + 2H+(aq) + 2Cl- (aq) -------> Zn2+(aq) + 2Cl- (aq) + H2(g)
3. Eliminate spectators:
Net Ionic: Zn(s) + 2H+(aq) -------> Zn2+(aq) + H2(g)
Sample Problems:
A) Write the net ionic equation for the reaction between aqueous solutions of hydrochloric acid and barium hydroxide.
B) Write the net ionic equation for the reaction between fluorine gas and ammonium iodide.
