Course Title: French III H
Section: 544-1
Objectives:
Students in French III Honors have been successful in their first two years of French and are ready to move on to more creative and abstract uses of the language. This course will not only reinforce the skills learned in French I and II, but will add to the students’ breadth of vocabulary, cultural and historical knowledge and challenge them to express their own personality in French. Upon the successful completion of this course, students should be well prepared to advance to French IV Honors and, ultimately, to AP French.
Methods:
The textbook Débuts and it’s accompanying film “Le Chemin du Retour” will be the centerpiece of our daily activities. There are pre and post-viewing activities as well as grammar components to each episode/chapter. We will continue to go to the language lab once a week (Mondays) for work on listening comprehension and pronunciation. There are also numerous on-line activities that will be assigned. I expect students to come to class prepared and willing to participate in all our activities. The class will be run in French except for new grammar explanations. Students will be expected to communicate with the teacher and among themselves in French.
Assessment Procedures:
A test comprised of both written and oral components will be administered after every two chapters. On-line and in-class quizzes will spot check grammar aquisition and comprehension of the film. Nightly homework and Monday lab activities will also be graded. There will be a mid-term and a final exam.
Resources Used:
"Débuts: An Introduction to French" (McGraw-Hill, 2006) text and workbook "Le Chemin du retour" instructional DVD to accompany the text.
"Le Petit Prince" Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.
Content and Pacing:
Since this book is an introductory college text, we will begin with chapter 6 and will finish the book in April. At that time we will begin to read our first novel in French, "Le Petit Prince".
