Course Title: French IV H
Section: 545-1
Objectives:
This course is designed for two types of students. If you are a senior and will not take any more high school French, the objective of this course is to (a) polish a skill that you can take with you in your future life whether for work or pleasure and (b) enable you to earn an acceptable score on a college placement test next summer. If you are a junior, this course is designed to (a) enable you to take the SAT II in French next spring and score respectably and (b) begin to polish the skills that will be necessary to go on to Advanced Placement French next year.
Methods:
I will follow the absence and make-up policy as found in the Students’ Handbook. An “infraction” will be given to any student who comes to class without his/her textbook or necessary supplies. Each student will have a “dossier” left in the classroom which will contain all returned tests and to which the student will have access for review purposes before exams. It is also expected that each student will have a notebook dedicated to French class notes and homework. Each student will also need a composition book in which to write their weekly journal entries and assigned compositions. Late homework will not be accepted but will earn a “0”. Late compositions, presentations etc. will be penalized 10% per day for a maximum of five days and then will earn a “0”. Use of any written, cyber or electronic translation device other than a dictionary will be considered an honor code violation. Extra credit will be extended to the entire class from time to time but never to an individual. Extra credit can also be earned by scoring well (over 40) on the Grand Concours (National French Exam) that is given early in March.
Assessment Procedures:
Tests (worth over 50 points) will be announced a week in advance and will be put on the test calendar. Quizzes (20 - 40 points) will be announced ahead of time but will not be put on the test calendar. Pop-quizzes (less than 20 points) may be given at anytime. Grades will be determined by the percentage earned out of the total points possible. I will follow the Shorecrest grading scale as outlined in the Student Handbook. During the third quarter I will conference, with each student who is eligible, about the advisability of continuing on to Advanced Placement French next year.
Resources Used:
Textes:
"En Bonne Forme" text and workbook/lab manual
"Au revoir, les enfants"
"Carmen"
All students should also have a loose-leaf notebook in which to keep our many handouts and a composition notebook for weekly entries.
Content and Pacing:
We will begin with "Au revoir, les enfants" by reading the text and watching the film. In mid-September we will begin "En Bonne Forme", covering one chapter every two weeks. In May we will read "Carmen" and study the opera it inspired.
Notes:
Please do not hesitate to call me at school (522-2111 ext . 116) or e-mail me at mmecarnes@shorecrest.org if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress in French.
