Shorecrest Mission Statement: |

"There is more to treasure in books than in all the pirate's loot on Treasure Island." Walt Disney |
The 6th grade literature curriculum is designed to help students build reading, thinking, and communication skills such as analyzing a documentary, using the Internet, and resolving conflicts in the workplace. Readings are thoughtfully selected, diverse mix of familiar classics and contemporary voices. Collections of poems, short stories, and non-fiction encourage students to enter into a meaningful dialogue with the ideas and themes of literature.
Sixth Grade will be exploring literature through the newest version of the Elements of Literature, the chapter book A Flamingo Named Flannigan, Weekly Readers, and “Newspapers in Education.” In addition, the students will be required to complete one book report or writer’s workshop each trimester.
Reading and discussion are key components of this class. While each student has his or her own comfort level with participation in classroom discussion, it is my desire to make a “safe environment” for participation in class discussions.
Student assessment will be a combination of reading comprehension, writing assignments, and project work. Homework and class participation are also vital elements of their total grade.
Students should check the literature web page often for assignment information, helpful links, and important dates.
