Traci Burke   Course Title: Pre Calculus Section: 250-2 Objectives: The focus of this course is to provide the student with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in a first year college algebra course and/or first year calculus course. The course begins with a study of sequences and probability. Students then learn a variety of functions including algebraic functions, graphing techniques, inverses, exponential functions, logarithms, as well as trigonometric functions. Other topics covered as time allows include vectors, parametric equations, polar coordinates, and conics. Methods: A variety of teaching methods are used to match the student’s varied learning styles. Projects and group work will be used to supplement classroom lecture and discussion. Whenever appropriate, the graphing calculator will be used to demonstrate concepts. Assessment Procedures: A variety of assessments are used throughout the quarter. Homework is graded for accuracy and completion each week. This makes up about 10% of the quarter grade. Each quarter we have 2-3 quizzes or projects with varying point values. There are 3-4 major tests worth 100 points each each quarter. A mid-term and final exam are given at the end or the first and second semester respectively. These are value at 20% of the semester grade. The final grade is determined by averaging the two semester grades. The midterm and final are both cumulative tests. Resources Used: Our text is Precalculus third edition, written by Robert Blitzer. The graphing calculator is used in almost every unit of study. Supplemental activities and worksheets that I have collected over the years from workshops and other books are also used.
