First Grade Language Arts

The Reading and Language Arts program at Shorecrest provides the students with a variety of experiences and activities to promote the love of learning as well as teach the necessary skills for success. Our curriculum is integrated and our application is varied. We teach leveled reading groups the first half of the year and then transition to flexible grouping using literature texts, leveled readers and technology. While working with the students in small groups each week, we also meet individually for structured guided reading lessons. Throughout the year emphasis is placed on fluency, expression and comprehension.

First grade is excited to implement a new reading series, Harcourt Storytown, for the 2008-2009 school year. The authentic assessments, phonemic and spelling components, and integrated writing skills will provide the students the opportunity to expand upon their prior reading experiences.
