| Social Studies "There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give children. One of these is roots; the other, wings." Hodding Carter |

As is the case throughout the lower division, the fourth grade's social studies curriculum has been designed based on five of the ten strands taken from the Curriculum Standard for Social Studies: History, Culture/Diversity, Geography, Economics, and Government. Since we have chosen Early American History as our theme, we focus on these strands as they relate to American History from 1600-1740. The main "textbooks" we use are books two and three from the series entitled A History of US by Joy Hakim.
The books in Joy Hakim's series are not written as classic textbooks. Instead, they are designed to be nonfiction books telling the "story" of American history in a narrative style. The reading is somewhat challenging, as the content is dense with information and the prose itself rich with meaning and strong vocabulary. Colonial Day culminates our year long study of early American history.
