DESIGNING A TOUR OF WASHINGTON, DC

INTRODUCTION

The second stop of the Velux 5 Oceans race is Norfolk, Virginia. This famous port at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay is home to the world's largest naval base. While the sailors will be busy preparing for the next leg of their journey, they will still probably take some time to sightsee. Norfolk is also not far from the historic areas of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. And of course, just a short 4-hour drive will take you to our nation's capital, Washington, DC.

PROBLEM

The Velux 5 Organization has asked for your help. They would like to create tours of Washington, DC for some of its special guests and their families. Unfortunately, each guest has different hobbies and interests. Therefore, you will each be given a biographical sketch of a special guest and must create a customized tour for him or her.

TASK
  1. You will choose six (6) must-see sites for your guest to visit in Washington, DC.
  2. Each site you choose should be chosen from the list of web sites provided.
  3. Be a detective! Choose some of the tour sites based upon the guest's biographical information. How might you figure out where your guest would like to go?
  4. Your final product will be a map of Washington D.C. that labels each of the six sites your special guest should include on his or her tour.
  5. Decide in which order your guest will take the tour. Label each site on the map with a number and complete the map key. Your tour should have a logical sequence.
  6. On a separate paper, you will record two interesting facts you learned about each site to share with your special guest.

EVALUTATION

You will receive a grade for this assignment based on the following criteria:

(a) The tour is designed to meet the guest's interests, hobbies or occupation. The more connections made, the better your grade.

(b) The tour has a logical sequence. Your guest can move from one place to another easily. Your guest is not running back and forth all over town.

(c) The map of Washington, DC is labeled properly. Your writing is neat and easy to read. All locations are capitalized and spelled correctly.

(d) You have two interesting facts for each of the six sites you have chosen for the tour. Your writing is neat and easy to read. Facts are written in complete sentences and in YOUR OWN WORDS.
