Cary Powers Recommended Links Student Voyage is the company that takes us to Spain each summer.   Course Title: Spanish III Section: 513-1 Objectives: Objectives: The third year Spanish class focuses on proficiency in the four language acquisition skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing). Students will be able to understand a native Spanish speaker engaged in normal conversation with minimal repetition required. As students develop their “Spanish Personality”, they will be able to formulate independent thoughts and express themselves with proper diction and accurate pronunciation. They will be able to read and understand material suited for an intermediate level language student, as well as to create written works using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures. Methods: Methods: The third level of Spanish is taught almost exclusively in the target language. Written and oral paired activities, guided conversations, and skits are practiced with minimal teacher involvement. Laboratory exercises using native speakers from various Hispanic countries enhance the student’s auditory understanding of the language. Cultural discussions and literature sharpen their knowledge of Hispanic lifestyles. Videos are used throughout the course for further exposure to various hispanic cultural themes and dialects. Vocabulary is introduced in whole language through pictures, literature and teacher explanations. Assessment Procedures: Assessment: Spanish three is offered to students who have successfully completed the first two years of study. Homework is assigned nightly and reviewed in class the next day. Tests are given frequently and with advanced notice. Quizzes are generally announced and are given at the teachers\' discretion. Weekly laboratory activities are corrected and recorded as a grade. Video activities are also corrected and recorded as a grade. Student projects and presentations relating to the topics mentioned under objectives are periodically assigned and graded. A mid-term and a final exam are administered according to Shorecrest and World Language Department policies. Resources Used: Resources Used: The textbook for level III is !Buen viaje! Students use the accompanying workbook and laboratory manual (which they purchase), along with practice tapes and a testing series that supports the text. Supplemental materials for the structures under study will periodically be incorporated and are on file with the teacher. Included are worksheets, videos, transparencies, posters, and realia. Web sites, such as Study Spanish.com for example, are used as well. Content and Pacing: Content and Estimated Pacing: The Glencoe text used for Spanish 3 has 8 chapters each dealing with a specific area of the Spanish speaking world. Within each chapter are historical pieces, cultural pieces, authentic pieces from contemporary Spanish magazines and newspapers, and unabridged selections from Hispanic literature. These reading selections are used at the teacher\'s discretion. The text has a flexible format with new and review grammar throughout, along with the reading pieces previously mentioned that range from easy to more sophisticated. The grammar covered includes, but is not limited to: preterite tense-regular and irregular, present subjunctive, masculine nouns ending in a, feminine nouns beginning in a or ha, imperfect tense-regular and irregular, uses of present subjunctive, verbs like gustar, ser vs. estar, hace with time expressions, acabar de, future and conditional tenses, all perfect tenses, positive and negative words, sino vs. pero, and por vs. para.
