Oceanography is the study of the seas and oceans. Oceanographers are the scientists who study the ocean by using geology, chemistry, physics, and biology. Physical oceanography is the study of waves, tides, and currents. Geological oceanography is the study of the sea floor and its origin. Chemical oceanography is the study of the chemical properties of seawater and how to extract chemicals from the water. Biological oceanography is the study of the various oceanic life forms and the marine environment. These are considered the four main types of oceanographers. |

Oceanographers collect information that is useful in controlling pollution, protecting young fish, and keeping the beaches clean. They can even predict future changes in the temperature of the planet and give warning of sea level changes. To collect this data, oceanographers use satellites, computers, robots, and ocean vessels. |

There are also many traits that are necessary in the field of oceanography such as fluency in computers, mechanical ability, certification as a scuba diver, physical strength, and high tolerance to motion sickness. These traits are necessary because the field of oceanography is extremely competitive. |
