Get excited for Oceanography!!

By Kristin

Oceanography is a science that is concerned with knowledge of the oceans and improvements in technology.  The study of oceanography is divided into different academic fields of study, which are geological, chemical, physical, and biological. Since the study of oceanography often examines the different fields it is known as an interdisciplinary science.

Different fields within oceanography
Geological Oceanographers study the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time.
Chemical Oceanographers study the chemical composition and properties of seawater and how to extract certain chemicals from the seawater. They also study natural and man-made chemical compounds in the ocean’s waters and seafloor.
Physical Oceanographers study waves, tides, and currents. They also study the ocean-atmosphere relationship that influences weather and climate.
Biological Oceanographers study of the various oceanic life forms and their relationships to one another; the adaptations to the marine environment, and developing ecologically sound methods of harvesting food.
Ocean engineering is also a division of oceanography in which one designs and develops new oceanographic equipment and materials for working in the ocean and structures for working on and under the ocean.
What education is needed? Where would you work?

Many oceanographers work for government agencies, colleges and universities, or for private industry.  Since oceanography is a science, a good background in math and science is necessary for success.  Knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology are also helpful in a career of marine sciences.  Further education after high school is to gain a bachelor of science degree and go into a job in a oceanography field or one can go to graduate school for a masters or doctoral level degree.  To have a job in marine sciences, most of the time is spent on the ocean in sea engaged surveys or research.

Oceanographers study the sea by going out in research vessels, and spend the majority of their time analyzing and interpreting collected data.  Oceanographers catch organisms, deploy buoys and instruments . measure ocean currents, or collect water samples.  To study the ocean floor they use submersible devices capable of withstanding the pressure at the greater depths.  Many oceanographers collect data then create computer models, or simulations of ocean phenomena.
