To become a marine engineer you must acquire many skills. Such as: mechanical skills, ability to make decisions, ability to communicate, an eye for detail, and problem-solving skills.
Knowledge is also an important part of being a marine engineer. A marine engineer must know about and be able to use different maths, physics and chemistry. He/She must also know about machine operation and maintenance, safety rules and methods, hydraulics and pneumatics, engineering, electrics, electronics, and computers, and deck and safety equipment.
-Maths and physics are required at A-level.
-Courses in Marine Engineering, Maritime Technology or Offshore Engineering are preferred.
-Must have School Certificate with at least a B2 grade in english and maths, although Sixth Form Certificate or a higher qualification is preferred.
-Two years college based training to include the learning of basic skills and initial development of special skills plus the BTEC Certificate or Diploma examinations.
-One year sea-service involving the completion of a programme of specific operational tasks.
-One year college based training for further academic qualifications and practical engineering skills.
A Marine Engineer:
- is in charge of all the equipment in a ship's engine-room.
-operates the engines that drive the ship.
-takes care of and looks after the systems such as fuel and oil.
-ensures safety for his crew.
-maintains all computer-based machinery and all electrical equipment.
To sum it all up, a marine engineer works on all aspects of a ship and its systems.
Marine Engineers must also be physically fit and enjoy working with tools. Some of the tools marine engineers will work with include: hand and power tools, machine tools, measuring instruments, lifting equipment, electronic equipment, a computer, and safety equipment including earmuffs.
Marine engineers usually work in shifts and can be away from home for long periods of time, but it all pays off in he end when you can bring in the big paycheck of up to 120,000 dollars per year.
