Come to the Sea for Marine Geology

By: Matt

Through the ideas of Marine Geology, it is a wide ranging discipline concerned with the history, structure and evolution of the Earth. Mountains, plains, islands, volcanoes, and canyons all exist in a form similar to the marine realm. It has been said that the ocean floors are the most active places on Earth through a marine geological outlook. In Marine Geology, studies are taken from the internal structure of the earth, of plate motions and of geological records of past climate change, to studies of the dynamics of beaches, of micro-volumes of molten rock in laboratory furnaces or the chemistry of individual microfossils. To further conduct these studies, marine scientists have to work in different conditions at sea and all over the world, using and developing an evolving array of modern instruments and analytical facilities.
Academic programs for marine geology can offer M.S. and Ph.D. degrees to students having learned oceanography, geology, and other sciences. In addition, skills in mathematics, chemistry, and physics are necessary. Students that want to take part in international exploration or to enter graduate school should study a different language. The Division of Marine Geology and Geophysics conducts research and graduate instruction in marine geology, geophysics and geochemistry. The programs range from purely laboratory studies to applied field work. Within these laboratories that the Division has, they are modern and furnished to certain standards. The most modern laboratories would be the SEM and TEM lab along with rock properties and stable isotope and geochemistry lab. Also, marine geologists may spend a good amount of time at sea.

________

Over 50,000 work or begin their careers in private industry, colleges and universities, for federal and state government, field exploration, or as research assistants in laboratories. Over time, the may become a project leader, program manager, or at a management and research position. Along with taking these jobs, salaries for these graduates at all degree levels are, on average, higher. Some starting salaries are more than $22,000 for a bachelor's degree and $29,000 for a master's degree. An upgrade in salary is joined to further education, with a master's degree recommended.
