Locations of Red Tide

Red tides have been found throughout the world. Scientific studies show a global increase in occurrence and geographic extent of harmful red tides. In Florida,the algae seems to originate 10-50 miles offshore along Florida's continental shelf. This region has been named "initiation zones."

Before to 1980, harmful incidents had been recorded from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, England, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, New Guinea, Peru, Scotland, Spain, United States and Venezuela. since then, red tides have become more widespread, with harmful effects now seen worldwide. the newest additions to that list include: Ireland, France, Sweden, Denmark, Romania, Italy, USSR, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, India, Guatemala, Australia and New Zealand.
