Red Algae Wins!!! The Curse Is Over!!!

Jacob "Al" & Eric "G" get it, "Al" + "G" = Algae

Why are red algae red? They are red because of the pigment phycoerythrin, which reflects red light and masks chlorophyll. This

allows red algae to be located at much deeper depths than that of many other algaes. They can be found as deep as 200 meters

below sea level. There are more species of red algae than green and brown algae combined. They have a wide variety of forms:

string-like, tube-llike, filamentous, and flat sheets, located mostly in shallow marine environments. Their scientific name is

rhodophyte, and are important in the formation of tropical reefs, source of food, and are more important to reefs than corals!!

Wow!!

This is a perfect example of how the pigment phycoerythrin reflects red light and absobs blue light pruducing the red color of Red Algae.
This is a well known Red Algae commonly called, Gracilaria cutissae. These can grow up to 18 inches in length.
