General Info

 

Cobia are usually large with an extended lower jaw. They are often mistaken for sharks. The dorsal fin is made of 7-9 spines. Cobia also lack an air bladder. The color of Cobia is usually dark brown on the top and it becomes lighter towards the bottom. Cobia spawn May through September in the Gulf of Mexico. They spawn in offshore waters or in estuaries.

Cobia are carnivores that feed on crustaceans and small fish. Their favorite food is crabs. They swim in packs of 3-100 fish. Cobia are known to follow behind rays, manatees, and turtles, so that they can eat whatever is left from them.
