When fishing for flounder, both artificial and live bait can be used.

Artificial lures such as plastic worms, and shallow-running spoons seem to work the best. When using a rod and reel, light tackle provides the best chance for catching a flounder. Many fisherman "gig" for flounder at night because it's the easiest way to catch them. This is becuase flounder go into the very shallow waters to feed at night. Fisherman use lanterns and gigs that are single-pronged to spear the flounder.

Flounder usually stay inshore, and are in the most shallow water at night while feeding.
