The Gulf Flounder is brown and has shading depending on the color of the bottom.The bottom of the flounder is white. It has 3 eye spots, one above its lateral line, one below the lateral line, and one on the lateral line. The flounder also has many white spots all over its body. It has strong teeth that are canine-like. Flounder have a spiny region that follows their lateral line and goes all the way around its dorsal and anal fins.

 

Early in it's life, the flounder's right eye moves over to the left, or the upperside of the body. Flounder are benthic, or bottom dwellers. The fllounder will usually reproduce offshore. They tend to feed on small fish and crustaceans.

 

Sometimes, the flounder will exhibit sexual dimorphism. This means females have eyes that are closer together than males, but the males have longer pectoral fins.

 

Flounder are usually found inshore on the muddy bottom and range anywhere from 2 to 20 pounds, and grows to about 15 inches long.

 

At the beginning of a flounder's life, it swims like a normal fish, but at the end of the larval period, it begins lying and swimming on its side.
