Ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua

Dog that runs in rough waters

There are two remaining species of the Monk Seal family, the Mediterranean Monk Seal and the Hawaiian Monk Seal. The West Indian Monk Seal was the third member of the family, but was hunted to extinction in the Caribbean. The Hawaiian Monk Seal is also known as Ilio-holo-i-ka-uaua, meaning "dog that runs in rough waters." This is very appropriate because the Seals, Sea Lions and other Pinnipeds closest known terrestrial ancestors are the dog and bear. Watch a movie.
