What was the goal of this activity?

The goal of this activity was to try to build a case that will hold an egg and not break it when it is dropped off two story bleachers. In order for the egg not to break my egg I will need to increase the time of impact and decrease the fore of the impact.

J=FT=mv=p

Describe your egg case.

My egg case could not have any air resistance devices. The dimensions had to be less the .5m X .5m x .5m and the mass had to be 2lbs. or 1kg.. I made my egg case out of a soft lunchbox and inside of the lunchbox there was a compartment where there was another small soft box. Inside or that I put my egg wrapping it in paper towels. I secured the smaller box inside of the lunchbox by using small towels to take up the space. In order to make my case weigh 1kg I needed to weigh my case down with small books and weights.

Did your egg break?

Yes my egg broke; it creaked.

Explain why.

All of the students’ egg cases had to have the same mass and fall from the same place on the bleachers. Because they all had to have the same mass and the same velocity, they have the same momentum. mv=p.  Momentum is the mass times the velocity of and object. The change in momentum also equals impulse. p= J. Impulse is the product of force and the time in which the force is applied. My egg broke because me impact was not low enough.

Reflect on your design. How could you improve you design or what new design would you use in your use in the future?

My egg broke because I didn’t increase the force of my impact enough. I think by the way I placed my weights inside of my lunchbox also had something to do with it. The weight could have been uneven and the lunchbox landed wrong, putting to much pressure on the egg. In the future I would put my egg in a harder case to prevent this from happening again.
