Egg Drop Eggstavaganza
By: Laura L.
Goal: Create an egg case that will increase the initial time of impact and decrease the force of the impact.
Description: dimensions: 5m/ 5m/ 5m, about 2lbs., no air resistance devices.
Materials: go crazy. I used a shoebox, bubble wrap, tape, cotton, Easter tinsel, tissues, a pen, and some books for the required weight.
Designs: (layers in following order)
My egg case was a box with the following matertials: bubble wrap around side, next layer that Easter basket stuffing, cotton, tissues, cotton balls.
Explain why (the egg broke or not) using the chp. 7 vocabulary words in detail:
The soft material I used to cushion the egg, so that it would bounce in the case rather than make direct contact with the hard wall of the box. The force of impact was reduced; causing the egg to came to a halt slowly. The change in velocity for each egg case was the same; each egg case weighed 2lbs and was dropped from the same height.
(egg is in bottom right of box)
Reflect on design:
I created the case to cushion the eggs, and to prevent them from hitting ANY hard surfaces (such as the edge of the inside of the shoe box). I made so the eggs would “bounce” and come to a stop slowly, distributing the force of impact over a longer period of time than it would otherwise experience. To improve upon it, I would experiment with other soft materials, I would put my egg EXACTLY in the center (mine was in the corner), I would drop the case from different heights, I would use different launching forces (throw it instead of drop it), AND I would REPEAT the same experiment, while using different kinds of eggs.
