Goal of the Activity:

To create an egg case that will increase the time of impact in order to decrease the force of impact to a point where the egg doesn’t break.

Description of my Egg Case:

One plastic lightweight cup put inside another, which was also put inside another cup. The egg was placed on the top one to lessen the blow on it. This was stuffed in with paper towels and soft material, held in place by some pencils strategically placed so that the egg did not move as much as it wanted to. The second cup was filled with soft material(on the bottom)with weights filling the crevices around. The third had weights concealed inside a plastic bag that was filled with air.

My Egg?…:

My egg did break, I believe it did because I did not prepare it to the standard weight of the others. I ended up filling the cups with any type of weight I could. The design was also top heavy, so it landed on its side. The scientific reason that this happed was that although the momentum of mine was the same as the others(Mass was equal, along with distance/velocity). The time was not increased enough for the egg to not take as much force from the ground, so it broke. The two(time and force) are inversely proportional to each other.

Reflections…:

If I were to design this and do this again later, I would probably put a little more time into improving the design of my egg case by increasing the weight by not using such light materials. If I had done that I think my egg might not have broken, due to the ingenious design of my already made egg case.  : )
