Egg Drop Extravaganza

The purpose of the egg drop extravaganza was to fill a certain case with different materials and to try to prevent from breaking.  The class dropped all their eggs at the same height so that they would have roughly the same momentum.  Filling the cases should change the time of impact which changes the force of impact therefore preventing the egg from breaking. 

Description of egg case
My egg case is a shoe box filled with towels and cotton balls.  The towels go on the bottom to increase the time of force before it hits my egg.  At the same time I want to be able to give my egg some space.

 

What is momentum?
Why did all egg cases have approximately the same change in momentum when they hit the ground?

Momentum is inertia in motion. Any object can have momentum as long as it is moving. Therefore when we drop our eggs our eggs are currently in motion so having momentum.

They all had the same change in momentum due to the fact that we were all around .5lbs -1lbs, and we dropped it all from the same height.
What is impulse?
Why did all egg cases have the approximately the same impulse?
Is the change in momentum, and results from force acting over a period of time. So when my egg hits the ground the impulse is that the egg stops due to the force that acts on the egg.
All egg cases have the same impulse because all of them have the same change in momentum. Momentum is inertia in motion so if they roughly have around the same mass,therefore having the same momentum they will have the same impulse, plus we all dropped our egg cases from the same height.

If all egg cases had same impulse, what varied with each egg case?
Each case varied due to the different materials we all used. Some used carpet padding, towels, and many other things.
Did my egg break? Why or why not?
My egg did not break. My materials allowed to it move freely therefore decreasing the force of impact.The towels increased the it took for the force to hit my egg therefore letting my egg be break free.
Reflection On Egg Case
The main thing I would like to change about my egg case is the size. The size of my egg case was to a hassle to throw off the stadium.
Real World Applications
Their padding helps to prevent injuries when the players fall or crash into one another by increasing time of impact and therefore decreasing the force.
When a puck hits the goalie their padding reduces the impact therefore keeping them safe
Air bags increase the time of impact when a crash dummy gets into an accident therefore keeping us safe from any harm or injury
