The book is applying a force on the table. The book is pushing downward on the table and the table is pushing upwards on the book.

Newton Third Law states that for every force there is an equal and opposite force. A force is a push or a pull upon an object which results from an interaction with another object. For example, if you push on a wall, it will push back on you as hard as you are pushing on it.

My website gives you an idea about Newton's Third Law. There are other links listed on this page that will take you to a science page, a vocabulary page, and a related links page.
