Newton discovered the law of inertia and then he discovered his second law, commonly known as the Law of Acceleration. His second law states, the acceleration created but a net force on a body is directly proportional to the size of the force, if its in the same direction as the force but its inversely, or oppositely, proportional to the mass of the object. Simply stated, acceleration and the force are related but the mass and acceleration are related, just inversely. For example, if you double the mass the acceleration will be halved. Or in equation form acceleration= net force/mass

The math of the Second Law

In his second law Newton discovered that if you applied a force, then remove the force it will continue on at a constant velocity. We can show the forces with free body diagrams. Free body diagrams are diagrams showing all the forces acting on an object. Every free-body diagram has a gravity force acting upon it, gravity is represented as ā€˜g’.

Newton's Second Law also includes adding a force, and in this animation the force, the car moving , is removed and the car stops.

Above:This is a free body diagram. This diagram shows all the forces acting upon an object. Any object is represented as a square and the arrows are the vectors, and they show how much force is applied.
