Newton's Third Law of Motion: Science Page

Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton was a physicist, born on the 4th of January 1643 in England. Newton is most popular for his discovery of the three laws of motion. He also worked in the fields of mathematics, astronomy, natural philosophy, alchemy, and theology. Isaac Newton died in England on the 31st of March 1727, a well known physicist and scientist.

Newton's Third Law

Newtons third law states that:

“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

When you sit in your chair you push down with a force on it, but the chair pushes on you with an equal force in the opposite direction. As Newton says when two objects come in contact they exert forces upon each other.

Action Force: The horses push down on the ground
Reaction Force: The ground pushes up on the horses with an equal and oppisiste force.
Action Force: The pushes down on the water.
Reaction Force: The water pushes up on the duck with an equal and oppisite force.
Action Force: The space shuttle is pushing down on the launch pad.
Reaction Force: The space shuttle is pushing up on the space shuttle with an equal and oppisite force.
Action Force: The foot is pushing forward on the skateboard
Reaction Force: The skateboard is pushing backwards on the foot with an equal and oppisite force.
