Class of 2005 Field Trips |
What is the Weedon Island Preserve?
Mrs. Peck's Marine Biology class took numerous field trips to Weedon Island. What an amazing preserve!!!
Short Introduction Trip
|
We walked along one of the boardwalks
back into the mangroves and salt flats. We were able to identify 2 species
of mangroves and numerous other salt tolerant plant species. We collected
specimens that were used back in class for an identification practical.
We observed many crabs, spiders, and anoles and were able to catch some.
(obviously we released them unharmed back into their habitat) |
The boardwalk enabled us
to access a saltwater pond habitat . We observed many birds and even
a raccoon! Thanks to Mile's amazing climbing ability, we collect water
samples which were used in the classroom the following day. The students
used microscopes to observe numerous live organisms that were living
in the pond water. These organisms are adapted to survive in the salt
pond environment. |
Collecting Sediment!
The best part of Marine Biology getting down and dirty in the stinky
mucky sediment!!!
We used sieves to separate the plant material and organisms from the sediment. We found worms and insect larva. COOL (well only to a Marine Biology teacher who has taken medical parasitology). In addition, we made cultures of the sediment to observe the bacteria and fungi present. We will let the cultures grow observing growth patterns. We used inoculating needles to create slides to observe the cultures using a microscope.
