In the novel Pompeii Robert Harris creates a plausible story of what might have happened in the region of Campania at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in August, AD 79. A main character, so to speak, is the Aqua Augusta and throughout the novel it plays the decisive role of influencing the actions of the principal characters. By citing key passages from the novel analyze how the Aqua Augusta influences the actions of Attilius, Ampliatus, Corax and Corelia.
